STEP´s steam plant produces process plant at Kaustinen

KPA Unicon Ltd have in the beginning of 2015 handed over a 6 t/h process steam boiler plant to Suomen Teollisuuden Energiapalvelut  – STEP Oy located in Kaustinen, Finland. "The delivery was turnkey delivery including comprehensive Unicon Biograte plant installation works, commissioning and training for the operational personnel. Civil engineering and foundation works were excluded.” STEP have started steam production for Findest Protein Oy’s production processes in the beginning of 2015.

KPA Unicon Ltd have supplied pellet-fired heating plant to Raahen Energia Oy


In the beginning of 2015 we have handed over a 10 MWth pellet-fired heating plant to Raahen Energia Oy in Finland. The delivery is turn-key modularized boiler plant solution, including all the necessary equipment and commissioning. The heating plant works as a peak load and backup plant in the winter time and it produces hot water to network of Raahe city. The plant is fueled with wood pellets and it have replaced some of the capacity of the existing oil- and gas-fueled boiler plants. Replacing the old boilers with a new modern pellet-fired boiler will significantly reduce the CO2 emissions resulting from the production of district heating.

Challenging fuels into utilization

Local fuels are often industrial waste that cannot be utilized for other means. Everyone benefits when it is used in energy production.

Katrinefors Kraftvärme AB's new boiler plant was built next to an existing plant in Mariestad, Sweden, and it produces process steam for Metsä Tissue paper mill as well as superheated steam for electricity production. Also most of the district heat used in the city located on the east coast of Lake Vänern is produced in the energy plant. The boiler uses sludge, a side product from the paper mill, demolition wood and wood chips as fuel and they are used to decrease the usage of fossil fuels. Both paper mill sludge and demolition wood are challenging fuels as almost half of the sludge is ash and demolition wood brings other challenges that have been taken into account in the boiler design.

Water boiler plant in Vantaa, Finland

KPA Unicon has delivered two Unicon WT 47 MW boiler plants to Vantaa Finland. The plants produce district heating for Vantaan Energia´s district heating network and serve as auxiliary and peak load plants.

The heart of the boiler plant is formed by two Unicon WT water tube boilers which consist of a water tube structured furnace and a fire tube structured convection part. As per modern standards, the plant can be remotely managed from Vantaan Energia’s control room. There is also a control room in the boiler building which can be used to operate the plant locally.

In addition to delivery, assembly and commissioning, KPA Unicon’s scope included the boiler room building, service room HEPAC equipment and installation, as well as fuel lines (+ oil tank) and spare power cable from the nearby Martinlaakso power plant in Vantaa.

KPA Unicon biomass-fired heating plant increases production of green energy in line with Savon Voima’s strategy

KPA supplied a biomass-fired heating plant for district heat production to Savon Voima Oyj in Leppävirta, Finland. Following the investment, the municipality of Leppävirta will have access to more district heat generated by using renewable fuels, in accordance with Savon Voima’s bio-energy program. The new heating plant will significantly reduce the consumption of oil.

The turnkey delivery included process equipment and buildings as well as installation and construction work. The delivery also included a flue gas scrubber. The plant has a heat output of 8 MW and it  produces hot water for the district heating network of the municipality of Leppävirta. The plant is fired by local wood-based biomass, such as forest residue and peat.

"We chose KPA Unicon as the supplier of our new plant because we have a long history of successful cooperation with the company during previous plant projects, the latest of which was the delivery of a plant of the same size to Suonenjoki.  KPA Unicon´s solution also offered the best overall economy”, says Savon Voima’s Project Manager Hannu Lipsanen.

Pellet fired plant produces green energy in Lapinlahti

KPA Unicon has supplied a 7 MWth modularized pellet plant to Savon Voima in Lapinlahti, Finland. The plant is used as a peak load and backup boiler plant.

The plant produces hot water to district heating network in Lapinlahti and it is fueled by wood pellets. The boiler plant is modularized and transported to the site as readymade modules. Modularization allows the plant to be moved to a different location if needed.

Less waste with cooperation


Boiler plant in Jepua was a joint venture with Ekokem and its aim was to build a small scale waste incineration plant to replace heavy fuel oil based energy production as well as to make use of locally available fuels. Nowadays the plant uses solid recovered fuels (SRF), KWH Mirka's Jepua factory's sand paper residues and biofuels. Sand paper residues from Mirka factory's production process used to be used as landfill and there were no readymade solutions for their utilization, but as a result of cooperation they are now used in energy production and the process steam produced in the boiler is used in Mirka factory production.

Unicon steam and water boiler plant

KPA Unicon delivered a Unicon WSF 53 MW boiler plant to Nahodka, Russia. The plant produces steam and hot water for the Eastern Siberia - Pacific Ocean oil pipeline´s Kozmino terminal in Nahodka.

Total capacity of the plant is 3 x 22 t/h, 10 bar, 184°C + 2 x 5 MW, 10 bar, 115°

In addition to the process equipment, the plant's electrification & automation equipment and assembly supervision, testing, commissioning and training by KPA Unicon's own staff are included in the delivery scope.

JSC Onega Sawmills, Arkhangelsk Region, Russia

KPA Unicon has delivered two Biograte 17 MWth boiler plants with a reserve 9MWth oil-fired boiler plant to Russia. The total output of the boiler plant is 43 MW. The Biograte 17 boiler units burn wood waste, mainly wet bark, from the sawmill JSC Onega Sawmills. The plant produces hot water for district heating in the city of Onega, which is a port on the White Sea coast.

The biomass boiler plant is not only having a good economic effect by using wood waste as fuel instead of coal, it also has a better environmental impact.  The Onega plant is a project which received investment in the framework of Kyoto commitments. The plants incorporate patented Biograte combustion technology

Biograte technology burns biomass fuels with high combustion efficiency and low NOx and CO emissions. The moisture content of the fuel can be as high as 67%. The SOx emissions of such wood-fueled plants are negligible. The fly ash is removed from the flue gases in an electrostatic filter or multi cyclone in accordance with local norms.
